Dutch Eredivisie

Ajax 4 - 1 Excelsior Rotterdam

Ajax strengthened their grip on fourth place in the Eredivisie with a one-sided 4-1 win over 10-man Excelsior.

Jan Vertonghen opened the scoring for the hosts after 10 minutes, before adding his second of the night just moments after the 37th-minute dismissal of Excelsior's Samuel Scheimann.

Despite being a man light Excelsior dredged up a goal just before the break when Darren Maatsen fired home, but Ajax secured the points thanks to Miralem Sulejmani's 63rd-minute penalty and Nicolas Lodeiro's strike four minutes later.

The win sees Ajax pull level on 27 points with third-placed FC Twente, who play on Sunday, while the Amsterdammers are seven points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar having played two games more.

David Texeira's first hat-trick for FC Groningen was only sufficient to secure a 3-3 draw with NEC Nijmegen in an action-packed clash at the Euroborg.

Texeira opened the scoring for the home side in the 28th minute only for Abdisalam Ibrahim to equalise two minutes later. However, the Groningen striker added his second after the break to regain the lead.

Melvin Platje levelled the score at 2-2 in the 83rd minute with a great strike as NEC thought they had secured a point, but Texeira scored his third almost immediately.

Platje had the final word, however, scoring his second in the dying seconds to pull NEC level for the third time.

ADO Den Haag earned their first win in five games with a 3-0 victory over NAC Breda.

Charlton Vicento opened the scoring 11 minutes before half-time and second-half strikes from Jens Toornstra and Marc Hocher made the game safe.

Adil Ramzi and Sanharib Malki earned Roda JC their second away win of the season with a goal apiece in their 2-1 victory over De Graafschap.

Malki opened the scoring just after the break before Ramzi doubled the visitors' lead in the 65th minute. Yuri Rose headed a late consolation for the home side.

FC Utrecht 2 - 6 FC Twente

FC Twente in the Galgenwaard put there by a good game with 2-6 win at FC Utrecht. There was more in the game than many goals, Nacer Chadli injured again in the second half the game was halted for 10 minutes because of fireworks.
The Tukkers were soon held the race despite Utrecht tried to attack. Twente was too soon to start as early as the 8th minute headed Wisgerhof 0-1 after a free kick out of John Ola. Ola scored the 0-2 John himself, John shot from the left side of the ball at the near post by the defenders around. The team from Enschede appeared so soon to put stamp on the game. But lost in the first half of Twente also very valuable for the team: Nacer Chadli got injured on his knee and had to leave the field. William Janssen was his replacement.
The second half began with an early goal in the 47th minute substitute headed home a corner from Janssen, the ball (0-3). Twente hielt the pace well filled and remained so even with the most ball. Janssen won his good turn raid with half goal in the 58th minute. Through a good shot of turning the ball disappeared into the far corner (0-4). Not only this match Janssen scored two goals, but the left winger John. The 16-he cut with his man and then neatly rounded off (0-5).
After starting 0-5, the match was stopped by referee Wiedemeijer. The reason was throwing fireworks, the turmoil in the stands and outside the stadium. The strike has lasted more than ten minutes.
After the brief interruption of Utrecht had more to see. There was more pressure put on Twente and that produced a quick goal on. Frank Demouge was a well planned attack gracefully. A few minutes later came the 2-5, Dave Bulthuis took a volley, which eventually bounced over goalkeeper Michaylov. Finally scored the same sunken Steven Berghuis for the Twente 2-6 and the match was so deserved to win by FC Twente.

La Liga matches 3 december

Sporting 0-3 Real Madrid
Di Maria, Ronaldo and Marcelo on target as Jose Mourinho's men collect the points at El Molinon
A 10th league win in a row for Los Blancos ensured they remain clear of rivals Barcelona at the top of La Liga ahead of next weekend's Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu

Goals from Angel Di Maria, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo were enough for Real Madrid to secure a 3-0 victory over Sporting Gijon in an ill-tempered La Liga game at El Molinon on Saturday evening.

The away side dominated the early stages of the game, with Lassana Diarra and Sami Khedira bossing proceedings from the centre of Madrid's midfield, much to the vocal home support's disdain.
Despite their early pressure, neither side created any chances of note in the opening quarter of an hour, although Ronaldo did begin to stamp his influence on the game, giving the Sporting wing-back Roberto Canella a fairly torrid time in the opening exchanges.

In fact it was Ronaldo who fashioned the first real chance of the game, finding space on the edge of the box but then shooting high and wide with his left foot.

Di Maria was then unfortunate to see his thunderous effort parried away by Juan Pablo after Marcelo had done well to pick out the Argentine on the edge of the Sporting box.

Marcelo was finding all sorts of joy getting forward from left-back as the half wore on with Sporting resorting to illegal means to stop the Brazilian at times.

The Uruguayan Sebastien Eguren was the first to find his way into the referee's book, after scything down the left-back on 25 minutes, with Oscar Trejo and David Barral following him into Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez‎'s book shortly afterwards.

Despite Gonzalo Higuain having a goal chalked off for offside Madrid did not have long to wait for their opener, just minutes later Di Maria robbed Damien Suarez of possession down the left before cutting inside and firing a cute finish past Juan Pablo from a tight angle.

Sporting perhaps should have equalised on the hour mark when Botia headed wastefully wide after Miguel de las Cuevas whipped an inviting free-kick to the back-post.

De las Cuevas then did well again to jink his way into the Madrid box, with the ball falling to David Barral just wide of the goal, but his tame effort was easily saved by Iker Casillas.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 to the visitors with 65 minutes gone, after he and Di Maria exchanged passes on the edge of the box. The Argentine winger then slid a perfectly weighted ball through to his Portuguese team-mate, who drifted past Juan Pablo before firing enthusiastically into an empty net.

A terrific save from Juan Pablo then denied Higuain from making it 3-0, after the forward had been played in by the in-form Ronaldo.

Sporting's Eguren was given his marching orders 10 minutes from the end, after receiving his second booking of the game.

Madrid did eventually add a third in injury time through Marcelo, after the Brazilian burst through on goal and fired a confident finish past Juan Pablo.

This victory cements Madrid's position in first place of La Liga ahead of the Clasico next week regardless of Barcelona's result later on this evening, while Sporting remain in the relegation zone with just 12 points from 14 games.

Barcelona 5-0 Levante
Fabregas, Cuenca, Messi & Sanchez all on target as Pep Guardiola's men keep pressure on Real Madrid ahead of Clasico
Cesc Fabregas' first-half brace opened the floodgates for Pep Guardiola's men, who ran out comprehensive winners to move within three points of their bitter rivals

Barcelona were convincing victors as they thumped Levante 5-0 at Camp Nou in La Liga to keep the pressure on Real Madrid at the top of the table ahead of next weekend's Clasico.

Cesc Fabregas grabbed a brace before Isaac Cuenca gave the home team a 3-0 lead at the break. Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez completed the rout in the second half.

The result leaves Pep Guardiola's men three points behind Madrid, who have a game in hand over their fierce Catalan rivals, while Levante remain in fourth spot.

Barcelona started the game brightly and were a goal to the good after only four minutes. Messi found Andres Iniesta, who saw his quick-thinking back-heel trickle to the feet of Cesc Fabregas on the edge of the Levante penalty area. The former Arsenal man controlled the ball before carefully placing it into the bottom corner of the net.

In the 20th minute the Catalan club could have doubled their lead but Gustavo Munua was on cue to deny the home side as he parried Messi's free-kick from 20 metres. From the rebound, Carles Puyol could not make clean contact from close range, with Munua eventually claiming the ball cleanly.

The lead was doubled in the 33rd minute and it was Cesc again who got the better of Munua. Xavi whipped an inviting free-kick into the box and Fabregas leaped highest to power his header into the top corner, leaving the keeper helpless as Barcelona grabbed a rare goal from a set-piece.

Guardiola's men were three up in the 37th minute with a wonderful team goal that was coolly finished by youngster Isaac Cuenca, who registered his second Barcelona goal. Messi's clever run saw the Argentine slide the ball to Iniesta, who then quickly moved it to Cuenca just inside the box for the winger to strike into the bottom - an instinctive finish from the Masia youth product to give his team a comfortable lead at the interval.

Barcelona were 4-0 up in the 55th minute when Messi grabbed his 17th Liga goal of the season to draw level with Cristiano Ronaldo. Substitute Dani Alves slid a precise through ball to the 24-year-old, who made no mistake in slamming his shot into the bottom corner of the net.

In the 61st minute, the home side made it five with a devastating counter-attack. Messi found Alexis Sanchez just inside the box in a yard of space. The Chilean attacker controlled the ball before lifting it over Munua via a slight deflection off Asier Del Horno for his third goal in a week.

Iniesta had a sixth goal controversially chalked off for offside in the 88th minute as the Blaugrana comfortably kept another clean sheet this season.

Barcelona are next in action on Tuesday evening when they face BATE Borisov in the Champions League at Camp Nou before travelling to the Santiago Bernabeu on December 10 to face Madrid.

Serie A matches 2 & 3 december

Genoa 0 - 2 AC Milan
Milan overcome tear gas scare to go top
AC Milan had to overcome tear gas at Genoa's Stadio Luigi Ferraris before downing the 10-man home side 2-0 to go top of Serie A.

Tårgas Milan Genoa - 0

The match was suspended for over five minutes as tear gas filled parts of the stadium with fans and some players visibly affected by the effects wafting down from the stands.
Local media reports suggest the gas was released by Police to disperse supporters outside of an ageing venue that is perhaps best remembered for hosting several matches at the 1990 World Cup finals.
Most of the home players returned to the refuge of the dressing room before the players re-emerged to begin play with the score level at 0-0.
Milan - dominating possession against a side who have now won only two over their past nine Serie A games - had always looked the likelier side up to that juncture, but had to wait until the 56th minute to make their superiority count when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was taken out by home defender Kakha Kaladze, who was rightly sent off for a second yellow card.
Ibrahimovic sent the home goalkeeper Sebastien Frey the wrong way from the penalty spot before the busy Antonio Nocerino finished off the 10 men when he converted Kevin-Prince Boateng's cross from close range on 79 minutes.
Milan are one point ahead of Juventus, who will regain top place if they defeat Cesena at home on Sunday.
Milan were busy from the opening minutes when Marco Rossi did superbly well to tackle Nocerino as prepared to pull the trigger before the Frey dived bravely at the feet of the midfielder to prevent a certain goal.
Frey kept out a shot by Robinho on 15 minutes with Milan keeper Marco Amelia doing similarly well to swat a wicked free-kick by Miguel Veloso that was dipping under the bar from out wide.
Veloso saw another effort clawed out by Amelia before half-time before Milan assumed control of matters in the second period.
Robinho somehow managed to flick Alberto Aquialni's cross over the bar from two yards out just before the hour mark, but it was never likely to alter the destination of the three points once Kaladze had been sent off.

Inter 0-1 Udinese
Mauricio Isla and Giampaolo Pazzini penalty miss condemn Claudio Ranieri's side to another home defeat
The Nerazzurri's poor home form continued as Francesco Guidolin's Scudetto-chasers emerged winners in a thrilling game, which saw two penalties and two red cards

Udinese grabbed a pulsating 1-0 victory over Inter at San Siro in a fiery match in Serie A, which offered plenty of action and excitement. Mauricio Isla gave the visitors the lead midway through the second half and shortly after, Javier Zanetti was sent off and conceded a penalty, which Julio Cesar managed to save.
Damiano Feronetti received his marching orders late in the game after he brought down Diego Milito in the box, but Giampaolo Pazzini also missed from the spot as both teams finished with ten men and a spurned penalty each.

Inter were the better team in the early minutes of the game as they were superbly shutting out Udinese's midfield and attack. Milito was the first to seriously threaten Samir Handanovic's goal as in the eighth minute but the Argentine sent a volley well over the bar from a difficult angle.

'El Principe' was guilty of another miss later on, when a through ball by Zanetti found the striker in space inside the penalty area, but he once again failed to find the target. Udinese, however, started to wake up from their lethargic start and soon began creating chance of their own.

In the 22nd minute, a good pass by Antonio Di Natale found Isla free in the box, but the Chilean could only strike wide with just Julio Cesar to beat. Inter were struggling to repel Udinese's attacks, which were growing more dangerous by the second.

The visitors' over-eager play, however, was leaving them vulnerable at the back, and on the half-hour mark Thiago Motta nearly put the Nerazzurri in front after a delightful one-two with Milito.

The two teams continued to trade chances in the second half as shortly after Gabriel Toje had a header saved in the 54th minute, Pazzini missed a similar opportunity on the other side of the pitch.

Still, Udinese's abundance of pace was causing Inter problems and the visitors were finally rewarded for their efforts. In the 73rd minute, a quick break saw Antonio Floro Flores rush between Walter Samuel and Andrea Ranocchia before teeing up for Isla on the right side of the box, and the Chilean made no mistakes with his thunderous finish.

Inter tried to mount a late comeback, but often found themselves exposed on the counter. One such break saw Zanetti foul Kwadwo Asamoah in the box, which resulted in a penalty for Udinese and a second yellow card for the captain. Di Natale, however, saw his spot-kick kept out by Julio Cesar.

Just as things looked hopeless for the Nerazzurri, Feronetti brought down Milito in the box in a moment of madness, which earned him two bookings in two minutes. The drama was completed, when Pazzini skied his penalty over the bar, wasting a chance to earn a point for his team.

This result sees Udinese draw level on 27 points with leaders AC Milan, while Inter sit 15th, four points above the relegation zone but could drop further down after Sunday's round of matches.

Premier League 03 december

Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United
Phil Jones' first career goal gets Red Devils back on track after League Cup exit

The England starlet registered the only strike of a game dominated by Sir Alex Ferguson's visitors but had Javier Hernandez stretchered off within the first 10 minutes
Manchester United got back on track as Phil Jones scored the first goal of his young career to secure a 1-0 victory away against Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Not everything went the Red Devils' way in a muted match, however, with striker Javier Hernandez being forced off on a stretcher within the opening 10 minutes having appeared to injure his ankle.

Jones' strike came after 20 minutes, an impressive finish at the end of an athletic run into the box, where he met Nani's left-sided cross.

Sir Alex Ferguson had opted for Anders Lindegaard in goal ahead of the benched David de Gea, while Wayne Rooney lined up just behind Chicharito in attack as the visitors looked to bounce back from their midweek League Cup disappointment.

Captain Stilyan Petrov returned to the substitutes' bench for Alex McLeish’s home side, with Charles N’Zogbia left out after reportedly 'breaking a club rule'.

An early blow came for United when Hernandez went down in the box having appeared to twist his ankle nastily, immediately signalling to be withdrawn, with Antonio Valencia replacing him in a tactical reshuffle which saw Young move into a central role behind Rooney.

The visitors dominated the opening 20 minutes without finding much quality in the final third, but eventually Villa lost sight of Patrice Evra in the space in front of the back four. With all the time in the world, the Frenchman slipped Nani through down the left, who delivered a clipped cross towards Jones, who made a run into the box and struck right-footed to impressively score the first goal of his senior career.

Nani might have made it two a minute later, but the Portuguese offered a very tame header having been teed up by Valencia on the right, and Shay Given had no trouble holding it.

In a rare opportunity inside the away half, Gabriel Agbonlahor showed some threat cutting in from the left flank and jabbing a smart pass into Barry Bannan, but the Scot’s first touch saw him carry it too far wide and the chance petered out.

McLeish then reacted in apoplectic manner after the Villa defenders stood off Valencia, allowing the Ecuadorean space to hammer a 25-yard effort just over the crossbar.

More bad news for the Scottish manager arrived moments later when Given, having rushed out to scramble a clearance, was forced off with an apparent hamstring problem, necessitating the introduction of Brad Guzan for only his second Premier League appearance.

After eight minutes of injury-prompted stoppage-time were played out, United went into half-time in unchallenged control.

Bad day at the office | Given's injury summed up a disappointing evening for Villa

Ten minutes into a sedate second half, Stephen Warnock shut down a potentially-dangerous United move when he expertly slid in to rob Rooney on the edge of the area.

There followed yet another sudden injury when Jermaine Jenas, only making his first start for Villa since arriving from Tottenham in the summer, appeared to trip over something in the pitch and was also stretchered off.

His replacement, Emile Heskey, seemed to give the hosts another option going forward, being targeted immediately from a corner. The ex-England striker was found at the far post after Richard Dunne flicked a header on but he nodded high to waste a decent chance.

Young responded for the visitors by cutting inside from the left wing and slicing a long-range effort low and just wide of Guzan’s near post.

With 15 minutes remaining, Villa finally forced Lindegaard to make a save, with James Collins heading powerfully towards the top corner from a corner only to be denied by the leaping Dane.

Late substitute Danny Welbeck nearly lit up the turgid second half as he beat three home defenders in a skilful, weaving run into the penalty area. Unfortunately for the Manchester United striker, though, he could not quite skip past the final man at the post and lost the ball.

Rooney then had a chance to finish the game as he careered forward on the break and bore down on the Villa area, but he opted to pass into the path of Welbeck, who put the ball in the net but was comfortably offside.

Manchester City 5-1 Norwich
Aguero & Nasri set up stunning rout as Premier League leaders extend 100 per cent home record

Roberto Mancini's side edge further clear at the top of the table thanks to a resounding win over the Canaries at the Etihad stadium

Roberto Mancini's side were dominant from the off, with Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli and Samir Nasri among the scorers, and move seven points clear for the time being, with rivals Manchester United featuring at Aston Villa later on Saturday.

Mancini decided to line up with  Aguero and Edin Dzeko up front, while Balotelli started from the bench after serving a suspension in midweek.

Steve Morison was playing in an isolated lone role up front for Norwich but still managed to cause Kolo Toure problems on a rare Premier League for the Ivorian.

First Toure dithered with a bouncing ball and Morison latched onto it, hitting an effort from 40 yards which sent Joe Hart scrambling to his right, before a mix-up between both City centre-backs saw Morison through on Joe Hart's goal, but a heavy touch from the striker let England's No. 1 shut off the opportunity.

The game then swiftly became one-way action with City trying to pick holes in Norwich's side as they kept 10 men behind the ball at all times, the creative trio of Aguero, David Silva and Nasri sharing the creative duties.

Dzeko had an effort blocked and the afternoon was threatening to become a frustrating one for City until they finally found a way through the wall of yellow shirts.

Nasri played the effervescent Micah Richards in down the right channel who played the ball into the box to Aguero and, when faced with five Norwich players, turned into space and toe-poked the ball through the crowd and into the Norwich goal.

City were not happy to sit back on their goal; Toure powered through midfield and played Nasri in down the right who again found Aguero at the back post but the Argentine fired his effort over and could have easily had a first-half hat-trick.

Norwich managed to hold out until half-time and had a great chance to equalise in the second minute of the second half, when Kompany missed his header and Elliot Bennett found himself through on goal.

The former Brighton winger rounded Joe Hart but the angle became too narrow and Bennett could only fire wide.

City then extended their lead minutes later. A free-kick was played in by Nasri, and the ball ending up in the back of the net after evading Norwich defenders and City attackers.

The home side were now fully into their attacking groove, Silva jinked into the box and hit a rasping effort towards John Ruddy's near post which was saved but fell to Aguero following up but he was denied brilliantly by the custodian.

A change was needed for Norwich and Paul Lambert decided to take the game to the hosts, bringing on Grant Holt and Wes Hoolahan for Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett, forcing a change of formation and perhaps style.

The change failed to have the desired effect however as another City short corner was worked by Aguero and Nasri into Yaya Toure, who curled a sumptuous shot into the corner from 15 yards.

Mancini wasn't looking happy with just three, sending on Adam Johnson for Samir Nasri and one of the loudest cheers of the afternoon greeted Mario Balotelli as he replaced Aguero.

Norwich were still working hard however and were finally rewarded for their efforts, Surman's drifted cross was met by Morison, the Welshman powering a bullet header past Joe Hart.

City regained their three goal cushion through substitute Balotelli, played in by Johnson the Italian's initial shot was blocked into the air and as it fell the enigmatic forward hit the ball into the net with his shoulder.

And the Citizens extended their lead further in injury time, Vincent Kompany picking the ball up and finding Adam Johnson who slotted home from the right hand corner of the box.

Wigan 0-4 Arsenal
Robin van Persie caps impressive victory as Gunners get back to winning ways

Arsene Wenger's side return to winning ways and extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to seven matches with a comfortable victory over the lacklustre Latics away.

Arsenal returned to winning ways and extended their unbeaten run in the league to seven games as they beat Wigan 4-0 at the DW Stadium.

First half goals from Mikel Arteta and Thomas Vermaelen put the Gunners in control of the game and from then they never looked like losing as Wigan struggled to get back into the game. The visitors controlled the majority of the match and extended their lead further through Gervinho on the hour mark and Robin Van Persie with 11 minutes remaining to seal all three points.

Arsene Wenger made two changes to the side who were held by Fulham, Laurent Koscielny and Gervinho recalled in place of Johan Djourou and Andrey Arshavin. Youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance against Manchester City in the Carling Cup earned him a place on the subs bench.

Both sides started the game confidently with some neat passing but the first chance of the game fell to the home side in the sixth minute. Conor Sammon controlled a long ball from Steve Gohouri, before finding David Jones on the left and he delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.

Wojciech Szczesny could only palm the ball into the path of Jordi Gomez; the Spaniard looked certain to score from 10 yards with an open goal in front of him but his effort deflected off Andre Santos for a corner.

The game had been fairly even for the opening 25 minutes but the deadlock was finally broken as Arteta fired a long range shot past Ali Al Habsi. Vermaelen broke out of defence before finding the Spaniard inside the Wigan half, Diame failed to close down the midfielder quickly enough and Arteta lashed the ball into the net from 25 yards.

Minutes later the Gunners delivered another blow to Wigan as they doubled the lead through Vermaelen. The visitors were awarded a corner on the right wing, Van Persie fired the ball in and Vermaelen rose above Caldwell and Sammon to head home at the back post.

Having conceded two goals so quickly Wigan were shell shocked and Arsenal very nearly extended their lead in the 34th minute through Van Persie. Gervinho set off on a mazy run down the left wing, he then found Van Persie on the edge of the penalty area but the Dutchman’s left foot shot was saved by Al Habsi diving to his left.

In the second half, Wigan broke on the counterattack through Ronnie Stam,  playing in Victor Moses, who managed to wriggle free in the area but his cross was too powerful for Sammon to get on the end of and the chance was gone.

On the hour Arsenal extended their lead through the busy Gervinho. Van Persie broke into the penalty area on the left hand side, escaped two defenders but his right foot shot was well saved by Al Habsi. However, the keeper could only palm the ball into the path of Gervinho and he fired the ball into the empty net.

With the game drifting towards its conclusion Arsenal added a fourth goal with 11 minutes remaining through Van Persie. Walcott beat Caldwell to a through ball before rolling the ball back to the Dutchman who made no mistake from 12 yards and begin the mass exodus of Wigan fans.

Arsenal move to within two points of Chelsea in fourth as a result of the win, while Wigan drop to the foot of the Premier League table on goal difference.

Newcastle 0-3 Chelsea
Daniel Sturridge shines to give Andre Villas-Boas a vital victory

A superb display from young England forward guided the Blues to three points on Tyneside despite controversial David Luiz decision and Frank Lampard's missed penalty

Daniel Sturridge capped an influential display with a goal as his strike, plus efforts from Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou, helped Chelsea past Newcastle in an end-to-end encounter at the Sports Direct Arena.

Both sides had chances but Andre Villas-Boas will feel his side deserved the three points, with Frank Lampard missing a first half penalty and Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul repeatedly denying Daniel Sturridge.
The atmosphere in the Sports Direct Arena was ignited before four minutes of play had passed. Referee Mike Dean produced only a yellow card when Demba Ba was hauled down by David Luiz – the Senegalese striker appeared to be through on goal as he raced on to Lovenkrands’ pass. Alan Pardew was furious but Ryan Taylor could only put the resulting free-kick into the wall.

Dean will not have improved the home manager’s mood when, minutes later, he awarded Chelsea a penalty. The call was correct – Yohan Cabaye had tripped Daniel Sturridge to goalkeeper Tim Krul’s left – but the Magpies might have felt that some semblance of justice was done when Lampard’s penalty was superbly turned away by the Dutchman between the posts.

Sturridge nearly corrected that miss shortly afterwards, again finding space in the penalty area before shooting powerfully against the post.

Chelsea were nearly punished for their early profligacy when more good work from Lovenkrands saw the Danish winger cross for Ba, who’s flicked effort forced an excellent save from Petr Cech.

Unfortunately for Pardew’s side, Ba’s opposite number was to do one better. A quickly taken throw-in deep into Newcastle territory found Mata who clipped a cross to the edge of the six-yard box. Drogba showed that there is still life in him yet as he powered his header into the roof of the net beyond Krul.

It could have been worse if not for the excellent Krul, who got down quickly to deny Sturridge after the young forward had raced on to Lampard’s defence-splitting pass.

Shola Ameobi was introduced in place of Hatem Ben Arfa, who had been closely watched by Oriol Romeu, after the interval in a move that suggested Newcastle might lengthen their passing in order to exploit Luiz, who had struggled with Ba’s physicality.

Pardew’s half-time switch seemed to be working, as Newcastle looked to have more of a grip on the game, but they struggled to make their possession count and create the chances that might lead to an equaliser. John Terry in particular was colossal at the heart of the Chelsea defence and the Blues started to look more and more comfortable as the half wore on.

It was not to be the Magpies' day. Torres, introduced late from the bench, saw his shot blocked but was able to recycle the ball to fellow sub Kalou who sealed the three points.

The Blues deserved the three points but the margin of victory was undoubtedly harsh on Pardew's team. Sturridge added a third in injury time to rub salt in the Magpies' wound, and cap an excellent display from the England international who continues to shine.
